Beppu

We took the bullet train south and headed down to Beppu, land of the Japanese Onsen (hot-pools). Beppu was a quiet little town which was a welcome respite from the big cities of Japan.

We caught a bus out into the country and walked down some country lanes, through a graveyard and in through the bush to get to a natural hot spring that is free and maintained by the locals here. We had the whole place to ourselves in the morning, pouring scolding spring water over our heads and lazing in the sunshine.

This paradise could only last so long because it is really for the locals, so when two young guys and an old man turned up, everything had to switch Japanese style. We were in swimming trunks but the Japanese bathe in Onsen naked. After Nic being treated to three Japanese willies and feeling pressured to get our kit off too, we decided to head back to our hotel which had its own private Onsen. Less winkies, more fun.

We like Japan, but seeing other men's willies isn't pretty in any country. Beppu is great and the hot pools are lovely though.
