The Great Wall

In an effort to avoid the tourist throng that jams, bustles and oozes throughout the city, we hired a car to go out to a far section of the Great Wall.

It is called the great wall for a reason; it runs for some 5000kms like a ribbon across the Chinese landscape. To comprehend the scale of the work involved requires simultaneously a close look at one metre of wall filled with bricks and weeks of labour, and also a low earth orbit view across all of China showing how much all of this work is multiplied by. A scale unmatched in human history, including works like the pyramids.

We went with a new friend from the hostel, Rob AKA "Dutch Rob". He is in Beijing for work presenting his PHD at a conference. Lovely guy...

Autumn is one of the prettiest months here. Not too hot and colours that sizzle...
